Petticoat and Corset

Those promised pictures!  I would have taken a picture of the petticoat on me but it's dreadfully unflattering without stays, and I didn't feel like taking the time to really get dressed.

The pleats from the inside.  I whipped them down to the twill tape with waxed linen thread.  Yes, the fabric has a strangely open weave - the things that happen when you order fabric online.

This picture keeps uploading sideways.  Why?  I don't know.  But this is the pleating from the outside.

Today I worked on my thesis corset.  Really, I didn't get a huge amount done, but I did make steps forward!  For one thing, I'd bought a new fabric marker at Walmart a few days ago, so I was able to draw over the thread-tracing and get rid of the basting stitches, and I was able to draw the lines easily for the last two channels.

This ... this looks pretty bad, I have to admit.  They're laced together at the back and at the straps, so they don't lie quite flat.  I sewed channels on each side of each seam, but I only put reed in one of each pair.  (I haven't cut out the cups yet, but I'm finally confident that they're the right size.)  The originals I'm working from were more heavily boned, and had some horizontal ones as well, but at this point I'm really just looking for something that will give me the right silhouette.

A little closer on the front panel.  You can kind of see the blue outlines here, and how sadly wrinkled everything is.  The next step would be to trim everything down and bind them (I can do the quilting later, and I'm not sure how much I'm going to do) BUT.  When I put these on and hold them at the front, they seem a bit loose at the bottom of the back. :/  I'm going to try cutting out the cups (instead of just putting a slit in, as you can see) and lacing the front as well, and then we'll see ... but if they don't still fit properly, I'll take out one of those side seams and take it in a little over an empty channel.  I don't want to, but if I have to ...

  1. The picture might load that way because you held the camera that way when shooting the picture. At least it does that for me. Then in my photo editor program I use the rotate arrows to rotate the photo into proper position. Then I upload the photo onto the blog. Hope that helps!

  2. You know, I thought that was the issue (even though I didn't remember taking the picture that way), but when I open the picture file it displays the right way round! I think it's just Blogger being Blogger.

    1. Hi, Alex! I got it from Fashion Fabrics Club online. I have no idea if they're still carrying it.
