Amadis Sleeves

I wanted to take a moment out from discussing types of dresses and look at the "amadis sleeves" that popped up when I was researching the Lévite.  As I discovered before, this referred at one point to a type of sleeve invented in the seventeenth century by an opera singer which covered the back of the hand, and at another to some kind of pleated sleeve with epaulettes - neither of these are applicable to the 1780s.  My first step was to look at all of the Galerie des Modes plates that label sleeves as "amadis".

Dress called à la Créole, made of the clothes worn by the French Ladies in America: it is a large muslin gown, with straight sleeves which go tight to the wrist; the gown is a little fitted at the waist and open around the throat in the style of a chemise; however, it is very easy and open in front; it closes with a pin when one wants it joined, and at the belt with a ribbon like the Lévite; on top of this, a sleeveless caraco à coqueluchon; the sleeves of the gown underneath form the amadis.  This woman is wearing a hat called "à la Grenade".

* I suspect this means her parasol, and is a reference to either a saint or the popular culture of the day.

Well, now it seems quite clear.  I was thrown off before by the trimming on the elbows of the first gown - that seemed like the most important part of the sleeve, and I had only one other dress with amadis sleeves to compare it to.  Manches en amadis are long, fitted sleeves with some kind of frill at the wrist.
