Stone Fort Days!

This morning, as Mom and I drove to the Old Stone Fort Museum for their Stone Fort Days re-enactment, I was still finishing up the hem on my fichu and sewing on the twill tape ties for my hat.  But since it was more than an hour drive to get there, I had more than enough time to finish and get everything in place.

In the parking lot, with everything in place.  Hands strategically in front of the worst spot on the jacket, arms in the only position the sleeves look right in.





I never got around to looking into a hatpin, so I was in this position a lot of the time.  When there wasn't a breeze, the tape ties held the hat on just fine - but when it's windy, a hatpin is necessary.  I would have bought one from the vendor who had decorated hats, but she didn't have any (though her hats were very lovely).

Sorry, Mom, but I think you look great!  She's wearing a cotton print fichu, a cotton cap and shift, a wool shortgown (we thought early October would be cooler), an osnaburg apron, and a quilted petticoat. 
Honestly, I think it's the best shortgown I've seen in person or online.  So there.

    Your jacket is lovely! I really like the cuffs...I am too chicken to try to fiddle with them.

    Thank you! I really love the cuffs of the earlier 18th century a lot more than the ruffles you see when the française came out.

I did threaten to write about the Ehle/Firth Pride and Prejudice , and since I'm in a writing mood without a topic I decided to make good. Ca. 1866 Brown Gown - A Close-Up Look

Antique historic clothing, not pieces I’ve made. A few of the pieces I bought myself, at thrift shops and on eBay and Etsy, but most of it was very kindly given to me several years ago by a blogging friend, Natalie Ferguson . Unfortunately, I’ve never had the chance to do anything much with them – but I’m so excited to be able to share them with the world this way! My collection ranges from a late 18th century shift to a 1980s cocktail dress, with most pieces from the early 20th century. Pattern Time: 1860s Chemise

For my 150th post ( \o/ ), a quick little pattern someone might find useful. When I was working my way through a box a few weeks ago, I came across a chemise that didn't quite want to lay flat.  I took a closer look at it to figure out why, and noticed that it had a unique construction with the sleeves cut in one with the body and gussets inserted in the neckline.  I did a really quick sketch of the cutting layout and measured the important bits, so that when I got home I could draw it up in proportion on graph paper. (nb. I messed up. I've been noticing it for a while, but didn't want to point it out from shame, but I accidentally gave the neckline length as it is when gathered - the horizontal cut should be much longer, to within about four inches of the side seam. Please correct for this when making your own version.)
